Alfama Where the real soul of the city lies.

The oldest and most emblematic neighbourhood of Lisbon, Alfama is a small medieval village or medina in the heart of the capital. It was spared total destruction by the great earthquake of 1755 due to being founded on the rocky soil of the highest hill of the city.

It is a place that invites you to get lost in its alleys and squares and to let your senses be your guide: seeing fantastic views of the river, hearing the sound of Fado coming from a typical restaurant, savouring traditional dishes and discovering magnificent panels of ‘azulejos’ (typical Portuguese tiles). Life in Alfama keeps the historical traditions and as you walk down towards the river, you find yourself in the 21st century, with old warehouses now converted into some of the most fashionable places in town.

Sé de Lisboa

Founded in 1147, the Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) is one of the city’s greatest landmarks as well as an important symbol of the Christian Reconquest of the territory. Massacred by the earthquakes that rocked the city in the 14th century and in 1755, the Cathedral of Lisbon is today a mixture of architectural styles as a result of successive restorations.

Miradouro de Santa Luzia

This is one of Lisbon's most romantic corners. It's a terrace next to a small white church offering views over the rooftops of Alfama and the river, and with places to sit under grapevines. On one of the church's walls a tile panel shows Castelo de São Jorge being taken over from the Moors in 1147, and another of Praça do Comércio before it was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.

Feira da Ladra (Flea Market)

Fairs and Markets

Street market where a little of everything and anything can be bought and sold: books, records, clothes, paintings and bric-a-brac. Although it is well known as a second-hand market you can also find new items there. On Tuesdays and Saturdays only and we recommend you go in the early morning.

Igreja de São Vicente de Fora

One of Lisbon’s historical buildings, it was built in honour of São Vicente, the patron saint of the city since 1173. It is worthwhile going inside and discovering the tiles with scenes from La Fontaine’s fables as well as Lisbon’s biggest organ which dates from the 18th century.

Museu do Fado

Located in the typical neighbourhood of Alfama, the museum is dedicated to the Portuguese Guitar and to Fado, considered by UNESCO in 2011 as World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Castelo de São Jorge

Castelo de São Jorge, built on one of the city’s tallest hills, is one of Lisbon’s most emblematic monuments. As a result, the surrounding landscape is magnificent, and the view stretches from the Tejo estuary all the way to the Eastern part of the city.

Miradouro das Portas do Sol

The postcard-perfect views from this terrace above the Alfama district are truly magnificent. It's a must-photograph spot for tourists, who also usually end up sitting for a drink at the kiosk café or at Café Portas do Sol on the terrace below.

Museu das Artes Decorativas

The 18th century palace facing the Portas do Sol viewpoint is home to the Ricardo Espírito Santo Foundation whose collection reveals how nobility lived in the 18th and 19th centuries. Flemish tapestries, Indo-Portuguese furniture, silverware and Chinese porcelain are on display in several rooms with magnificent painted ceilings and walls covered in tiles from top to bottom.

Ótima estadia

De início não gostei.... A recepção era virtual coisa K nunca me aconteceu. Não há muita informação. Mas depois adorei a limpeza era nota dez apartamento muito confortável e com todos acessórios de cozinha necessários. Recomendo e voltarei outra vez.

Loved it

PERFECT location. Minutes from every thing. Gorgeous view from across the street. Stayed in 3F and had a lovely peaceful terrace which to sip coffee and listen to church bells (even a rooster). The apartment had everything we needed and I loved the restoration of the building and the minimalist decor. The wifi was good and the fruit basket was a nice touch. We arranged transportation to and from the airport with Hello Lisbon and our driver was amazing; gave us advice on things to do and where to go. An all around delightful person. Well done and thank you Hello Lisbon, we will be back!

Great long weekend in Lisbon

The building is well-located in Alfama - a district with narrow, winding streets and plenty of life at weekends. We had apartment (we had 3F - a Superior Studio), which was comfortable and had all facilities needed for some cooking, ironing and a terrace to catch some rays. The keyless code entry for the front door and apartment was useful - the only interaction we had with the reception was to request a code to get into the baggage room to pick up our luggage after the check-out time. The only negative was the wooden floor, which meant that people walking about upstairs caused a bit of a racket, but it's a small negative! It's possible to walk to the main attractions - a couple of trams run past the building, but they're usually full or infrequent. We walked from the Martim Moniz Metro from the airport and caught a taxi back to it - it's not far, but very hilly, so not great for lugging bags.

My stay at Alfama Lisbon

This hotel Is a very clean and well located hotel near to most important monuments, historical places and supermarkets. This hotel is well equipped and very well maintained. It had very resourceful tools in the kitchen for your meals and very convenient for getting bus stops and transportation. Getting into the hotel is very simple and fast also. Very nice stay here! Would recommend!

Perfect for our trip

Bare but comfortable, clean, modern, and very well located. The building is pretty funky we loved it and it was also great to have a kitchen (although the coffee machine is less than ideal). We were at first taken aback by having to enter with a code (which did not work at first), but the intercom system worked well and all our needs were satisfied. One thing, also, we left befind a leather jacket and wrote them an email. They were incredible attentive and sent it back to us as we agreed.
