Baixa Baixa de Lisboa (downtown Lisbon)

Baixa de Lisboa (downtown Lisbon), or also known by “Pombaline downtown“, owes its name to the Marquis of Pombal, the man responsible for its reconstruction following the big earthquake of 1755, which destroyed the centre of the medieval city

Downtown Lisbon was rebuilt based on a geometric pattern comprising a grid of streets with very specific shapes and sizes, named after various crafts and craftsmen of the time (cobblers, gilders, harness makers, goldsmiths and silversmiths). Given the urgency, the rebuilding works were incredibly revolutionary for the time, resorting to mass production for the first time, including the standardization of some elements, such as the windows, the first-floor balconies, or the steps.

To get to know the area better, we suggest you walk down Rua Augusta heading towards the river, pass by Mude – Design and Fashion Museum – and climb up the majestic Arco Triunfal just before you reach Praça do Comércio. At this square you can visit the Lisbon Story Center or Martinho da Acada, one of the cafés favoured by writers such as Fernando Pessoa, Almeida Garrett or Eça de Queiroz. At Ribeira das Naus, right in front of the Tagus river, take advantage of one of the esplanades to rest or watch a magnificent sunset at the end of the day.

Taking advantage of the proximity to Rossio train station, don’t miss the opportunity of catching a train to the town of Sintra – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – where you can visit, among other monuments, Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, stunning examples of 19thcentury romantic architecture. You can climb up to the Castelo dos Mouros (the Moors Castle), built at the beginning of the 8th century, with a spectacular view of the Sintra mountain range and the Atlantic.

Elevador de Santa Justa

Inaugurated in 1902, it is the only vertical elevator in Lisbon providing public service as it connects Baixa to Bairro Alto. This monument of Neo-Gothic inspiration, designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a disciple of Gustave Eiffel, is a cast-iron structure enriched with filigree art work.

Convento do Carmo

Built in 1389 under orders of Condestável D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, the Convento da Ordem do Carmo finds itself in a privileged position, overlooking Rossio and close to the São Jorge Castle hill. The convent’s church, once Lisbon’s main Gothic church, was left in ruins after the 1755 earthquake and remains one of the most visible reminders of that tragic event.

Mude - Design and Fashion Museum

Mude is one of the most important museums of 20th century design, with its collection being considered one of the best in Europe. Here you will find works by designers such as Phillipe Starck or Charles Eames and couture pieces by Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood or Yves Saint Laurent.

Praça do Comércio

The largest square in Lisbon, and one of the biggest in Europe, it faces the river and was originally planned to welcome those who arrived at the city by boat. In one of its many esplanades, you may enjoy a drink or a meal at any time of the day whilst contemplating the Tejo river or the grandeur of the surrounding area.

A localização é perfeito. Descendo as escadas você encontra o comércio. As atendentes são simpáticas. A Bruna é uma simpatia , sempre com um sorriso para lhe ajudar . Apartamento completo, toalhas diariamente trocadas e tem maquina de lavar loucas e roupas. Voltarei !!!

Good place to stay

We travel alot. We were taken away by the professionalism of this company. The room was amazing. Clean, well stocked. The PIN was given beforehand. The location - amazing. It is near Rossio metro, train station, restaurants, shops, walking distance to EVERYTHING! The providers were at a telephone call away. There is nothing I would change. We couldn't have found a better place to stay in Lisbon if we tried. This will not be the last time we stay at this aparthotel.

Eat Love Pray Portugal

The location was perfect! In the middle of City Center. Close to the train station, shopping, museums restaurants. My apartment was new, clean, cozy and had all of my amenity needs. I felt very comfortable staying there being that I was traveling solo. Lucky me great find!

The best!

This is definitely the best place to stay in Lisbon. It is in the middle of everything. It is like 3 steps away from the main metro station Rossio which is great if you want metro or going to Sintra. Love it!
