Built in the 16th century, Bairro Alto is one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in Lisbon. Its narrow streets, Portuguese pavement, fado houses and nightlife are some of the examples that make this neighbourhood one of the most famous spots of the capital.

Going back in time, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Bairro Alto hosted, in its streets, the headquarters of the main newspapers and printing houses in the country: Diário de Notícias and O Século. Nowadays, it is possible to go down in history as they have streets named after them.

Combined with the national history, Bairro Alto has the best views of the city. The Santa Catarina viewpoint, most known as “Adamastor”, a mythical figure created by poet Luís Vaz de Camões, offers a breathtaking view of the Tagus River. Famous for its cool atmosphere and magnificent sunset, this is a garden that is visited by many young people and adults from different cultures.

The São Pedro de Alcântara garden, built in 1864, on the edge of Príncipe Real with Bairro Alto, is full of statues of heroes and gods of the Greco-Roman mythology and offers one of the most beautiful views of Lisbon right to São Jorge Castle, Alfama and Baixa-Chiado.

Besides the landscapes offered by Bairro Alto viewpoints to their visitors, it is possible, in a short visit, to get to know the typical Portuguese neighbourhoods a little better. The Gloria Lift, built in 1882, offers you a very pleasant journey from one of Lisbon's most emblematic areas, Restauradores Square, to the São Pedro de Alcântara garden.

Elected a tourist destination choice, the Bica Lift, built in 1892, links Rua de Sao Paulo to Largo de Calhariz, to Bica de Duarte Belo Street, is now considered a national monument. Besides being a typical Portuguese neighbourhood, Bairro Alto offers you colourful and lively streets and a variety of gastronomic options.

As night falls, Bairro Alto becomes one of the most fun nightlife spots in Lisbon, offering a huge diversity of bars, which has made this neighbourhood a meeting point for thousands of people of all ages and different cultures. There are seas of people that light up the streets of Bairro Alto.

Bairro Alto's bars and taverns are pages of a storybook. The “Galeria Zé dos Bois” is an example of those bars. It opened in 1994 and seeks to attract a more diverse audience. It is a bar characterized by its contemporary art, alternative music, theatre and visual arts.

If you are looking for a bar with a view over Lisbon, “Park” is the ideal choice for you. A 180-degree rooftop renowned for the diversity of cultural activities it offers to its guests: open-air cinema, live music, various DJ performances and thematic events.

If, on the other hand, you are looking to taste Portuguese wines, the “Artis” bar, one of the oldest in Bairro Alto, is a must stop. There you may find 100% Portuguese wines of all kinds (reds, liqueurs, sparkling wines ...) that may be accompanied by the famous chicken toast and other snacks.
