The São Bento neighbourhood is named after the Benedictine convent built at the end of the 16th century which at one time housed the national archives and which is today the Assembly of the Republic, headquarters of the national parliament. In Rua de São Bento, the neighbourhood's high street where several cultural and historical public figures lived, namely Hintze Ribeiro (politician), Alexandre Herculano (writer, historian and journalist) and Amália Rodrigues (fado diva), you will find Lisbon’s most renowned antique dealers, interior design stores and quaint traditional little shops. The neighbourhood is peaceful and for the most part with little traffic, making it appealing to walk around in. Once you leave São Bento you will quickly reach Bica, Bairro Alto, Chiado and the Tejo river.
